Why Locals Love Kinoko

Located in the vibrant heart of Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood, Kinoko offers a genuinely unique culinary adventure, expertly blending Asian fusion, Japanese, and Cajun flavors into an inspired menu that delights both the eyes and palate. This is not your ordinary sushi spot — Kinoko artfully reinterprets classic Japanese dishes through the soulful lens of New Orleans, crafting an exciting dining experience that resonates with an energetic, creative vibe.

Step inside and you’ll immediately notice the lively atmosphere that perfectly complements the innovative cuisine. The restaurant’s décor strikes a harmonious balance between sleek modern touches and warm, inviting details, encouraging diners to relax and savor the culinary journey. With a carefully curated soundtrack setting the mood, Kinoko feels as much like a spirited gathering place as it does a restaurant.

The menu itself is a testament to bold, thoughtful flavor combinations and masterful technique. Sushi lovers will find irresistible options such as the Panko Fried Oyster Mushroom Roll, a crispy, vegan-friendly delight with perfectly seasoned oyster mushrooms wrapped in delicate rice and seaweed, paired with a house-made vegan sauce. Seafood enthusiasts rave about the Lump Crab and Remoulade Roll — jumbo lump crab balanced beautifully with a tangy remoulade sauce — or the sublime Bluefin Tuna Roll, where the buttery richness of the fish meets a subtle wasabi kick.

But what truly sets Kinoko apart are the mains that marry two distinct culinary cultures with mouthwatering results. The Gumbo Ramen is a standout, weaving together the hearty, spicy essence of classic New Orleans gumbo with tender ramen noodles, andouille sausage, and vibrant okra — an intricate, soul-satisfying bowl that speaks to Kinoko’s culinary expertise and inventive spirit. Equally irresistible is the Jambalaya Fried Rice, loaded with gulf crawfish, scrambled eggs, and a subtle tabasco ketchup that elevates each bite. If comfort food is on your mind, the Chicken Katsu with Japanese brown curry and miso cabbage slaw offers a perfect harmony of textures and flavors — crispy, savory, and utterly addictive.

Vegetarians and vegans will appreciate thoughtful dishes like the Panko Fried Oyster Mushroom Roll and a variety of fresh, handcrafted sides including the delightful Japanese Potato Salad topped with tobiko. Every plate at Kinoko is carefully composed to deliver freshness and depth, reflecting a kitchen that respects its ingredients and guests alike.

The customer buzz speaks volumes: Joan Lee, who grew up in New Orleans, wholeheartedly recommends Kinoko for its authentic NOLA influences woven seamlessly into Japanese fare, calling the experience “delicious” with a “lively and friendly atmosphere.” Frequent visitor Johnnie Chica describes it as her “absolute favorite place to eat,” praising the perfect spice balance and unforgettable dishes like the Crawfish Jambalaya Rice and the famous Molten Matcha Lava Cake dessert. Others highlight the friendly staff, especially shoutouts to Emma for her excellent recommendations and the consistently fresh offerings that keep them coming back for more.

Kinoko is more than just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of culture, creativity, and community. Whether you’re craving innovative sushi, crave-worthy Cajun-inspired mains, or vibrant vegan options, this Brooklyn gem invites you to indulge in a dining experience that is as exhilarating as it is delicious. Don’t miss the chance to explore this fusion haven where every bite tells a story, and every visit feels like a flavorful discovery.

Grew up in New Orleans and when a friend of mine from New Orleans visited for the weekend and recommended this place, we had to of course check it out! The atmosphere seemed lively and friendly. It was fun to see how the chef weaved NOLA influences into Japanese fare. Happy to report that the food here was delicious and did not disappoint. Would definitely go back to try other items. Thanks for a great evening!

What an incredible experience we had at Kinoko. Being from New Orleans, we decided to take a short trip from the city into Brooklyn to try Kinoko. We were blown away with the fun vibes, beautifully decorated restaurant in a wonderful neighborhood, but mostly, with the food. We tried multiple dishes per course and each were fabulous! The spice level was perfect, plating was on point, and we could greatly taste how New Orleans flare was delicately integrated into each bite. 5 out of 5 stars, and we cannot wait to come again on our next visit!

Stopped by to get some Gumbo Ramen and it was great! Emma greeted me and recommended the dumplings as a small plate. She’s got good taste because it was delicious! I was in a rush so I didn’t get to finish the ramen but I can’t wait to come back and enjoy it again!

My absolute favorite place to eat at now. I went for the first time about 3 weeks ago, and since then I’ve been 4 times. I just can’t get enough of Kinoko’s unique approach to food, but also their atmosphere. The music selection is ALWAYS on point. As for the food, I highly recommend the Crawfish Jambalaya Rice, the Jackfruit roll, and of course, the greatest dessert ever… the Molten Matcha Lava Cake. There’s so many options to try on this menu, and so far I’ve been too addicted to what I ate on my first visit to even try new things. The owner, Kelseay, is such a sweetheart and very easily the heart & soul of the place. Devyn is the best server to have, she already knows exactly what I’ll order before I even say anything. Maybe that’s just down to me being predictable, but more than likely it’s her down-to-earth personality. I love you guys!!!

I fear I am never going to shut up about this place. Stumbled in here after having no plans and I’m so glad we did! Most of the time I try sushi I am at least a little underwhelmed on some of the dishes or rolls… well, consider me fully whelmed. Kinoko is INCREDIBLE. Every employee was super helpful and kind, we got seated quickly, the space was clean with ample seating both indoors and out. The owner/chef Kelseay stopped by to chat, and welcomed us to the neighborhood warmly. This place opened up ~6 months ago, but it felt so cozy and operated smoothly it seems like it’s been a neighborhood staple for years. Tried the Firefighter Roll, from the special menu - this is to die for. Absolutely sacrifice your soul and spend eternity in purgatory or whatever just to have a nibble. I loved it. It was wrapped in foil and we got to have a small and sensible pyrotechnic moment, as the roll was heated to melty perfection. The volcano roll was also a star, plated nicely and delicious. One of the things that stood out the most though was how a seemingly ~*basic*~ cucumber & avocado roll could be so tasty. With the addition of the kinoko chili oil which incorporates mushrooms, it elevated it to perfection. Really well priced roll too! The chili oil made an appearance on another special that we loved: the scallop nigiri with shiitake and the chili crunch. The scallops were perfectly buttery and soft. I did not have a single bad bite or even underwhelming bite. Every moment of this dining experience was pure taste bud bliss. GO HERE IMMEDIATELY. Meal with 4 items fed 2 people to fullness for under $100 Including 20% tip, which you absolutely should be tipping at minimum… tbh they deserve a million dollars. Update: every single vegan option is amazing. The Mango Tango and the Creole Roll are both so outstanding.

Creative food and nice ambience. Small kitchen and staff, so the food took a little longer than expected. Dumplings were good, the NOLA roll was tasty, just a little more expensive than expected, chicken karaage was a good portion, but maybe should have been sauced, and the jumbalaya rice was comforting.
